Addiction Recovery
What is addiction?
It's a chronic disorder that disrupts all spheres of one’s life, including career, relationships, and mental and physical well-being. This chronic nature is what makes addiction so serious, as it involves the continuous intake of a substance despite its harmful effects or engaging in detrimental behaviours.
What are the different types of addictions?
Substance Addictions
Substance addiction, or substance-use disorder, is the dependence on substances like alcohol, cannabis, caffeine, prescription and non-prescription medications, and hallucinogens. Over time, the body may develop a tolerance to these substances, requiring larger doses to achieve the same effect, which can lead to a vicious cycle of increased substance intake.
Non-substance-related Addictions
Behavioural addictions, such as shopping, social media use, gambling, dieting and exercising, are more common than you might think. You are not alone in your struggles, and there is help available.
Understanding the signs of addiction is crucial. It empowers you to recognise when a behaviour or substance is becoming problematic, allowing you to take control and seek help if needed.
What are the signs?
- Inability to stop the activity or discontinue the substance
- Intolerance to the activity or substance, which results in increased engagement of the activity or use of the drug.
- Preoccupation with the substance or activity which stimulates a craving for it.
- Loss of control develops when the individual experiences a complete lack of control over the urge or substance use.
- Health issues and other potential problems occur as a result of the addiction. The preoccupation with the substance or activity may cause you to neglect other areas of your life, resulting in complications and affecting your overall well-being.
Is recovery possible?
It’s possible to recover fully from addiction, but the first step is recognising the problem and actively seeking professional help in order to regain control over your life.
